Domestic collections are counted where the taxpayer is registered (before IGST is settled between states), so states with large corporate headquarters rank high. IGST on imports is not assigned to any state, and collections not tied to a state (online services from abroad, "other territory") are left out.

Understanding GST Collections

CGST & SGST

On a sale within a state, GST is split equally: Central GST goes to the Centre and State GST to the state where the sale happens.

IGST

Integrated GST is charged on sales between states and on imports. The Centre collects it, then settles the state portion with the state where the goods or services are consumed.

Compensation Cess

A cess on items such as tobacco, cars and aerated drinks, created to compensate states for revenue lost when GST began. GSTN treats it as separate from GST, so it is shown on its own here.

Gross vs Net

Gross GST is everything collected. Net GST subtracts refunds — mostly to exporters, who get back GST paid on inputs, and to businesses whose input tax exceeds the tax on their sales.

GST Collections: Frequently Asked Questions

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) releases each month's gross and net GST collections at the start of the following month, and adds detailed state-wise figures to its GST Statistics workbooks a few weeks later. This page updates automatically when those workbooks change. Recent months are provisional and can be revised.

Collections usually peak in April, when businesses pay the tax on March's year-end sales.

Gross GST is all the CGST, SGST and IGST collected in a month, including IGST on imports. Net GST is gross GST minus refunds paid out — mainly IGST refunded to exporters, and refunds to businesses whose input tax credit exceeds the tax on their sales (for example, when inputs are taxed at a higher rate than the finished product). Refunds are published from April 2020.

On a sale within a state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST), which goes to the Centre, and State GST (SGST), which goes to the state. On sales between states and on imports, Integrated GST (IGST) is charged instead: the Centre collects it and then settles the state portion with the state where the goods or services are consumed. Union territories without a legislature levy UTGST in place of SGST.

Maharashtra collects by far the most — about 22% of domestic GST in FY 2025-26 — followed by Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana. These figures count tax where the paying business is registered, before IGST is settled between states, so states with large corporate headquarters rank high.

Compensation cess was levied on items such as tobacco, cars and aerated drinks to make up for revenue the states lost when GST began. It was meant to last five years and was later extended to repay loans taken to compensate the states during COVID. After the GST rate changes of September 2025 it was wound down: it fell to almost nothing by March 2026, and GSTN does not report it from April 2026.

This page leaves cess out of the main series so that every month compares like for like.

Headlines often quote GST including compensation cess, which this page leaves out for consistency, so growth rates can differ by a fraction of a percentage point. GSTN's first release for a month is also provisional: figures are revised as returns are processed, and this page always shows the latest revision.

All figures come from the Goods and Services Tax Network's GST Statistics (state-wise collection and gross & net collection workbooks). Recent months are provisional and may be revised. Refunds are published from April 2020. Figures are for information only — verify with the official releases before relying on them.
